Someone said something to me the other day that really resonated.
“It’s never too early to eat chocolate or ice cream.”
Two weeks ago, we added an authentic Italian gelato maker to the farmers market mix. Josh Biffle, the gelato master, is doing it right and sourcing some of the more important ingredients from Italy including hazelnuts and pistachios.
I mention this little farmers market factoid because the person who said this was eating a cup of gelato (half pistachio and half dark chocolate). It was just 10:45 on a Sunday morning as she stood in front of my tent savoring every single bite. Honestly, she is right. It’s never too early to eat chocolate or ice cream.
Since I resemble that remark, I figured today was as good a time as any to share with you one of my favorite new smoothie recipes. Particularly since it’s chocolate. And sort of like ice cream, combining two of my favorite foods in one healthy, delicious and satisfying way to start the day.
Even though I am not who likes to eats first thing in the morning, I can handle this smoothie. Rich, cool and chocolatey, you’ll swear you’re eating dessert for breakfast. And what’s wrong with that?
Dark Chocolate Smoothie
- 1 cup almond milk plus 2 tablespoons if it's too thick
- 1/2 cup of ice
- 1 frozen banana
- 1 1/2 tablespoons almond butter
- 1/2 avocado
- 1 tablespoon raw cacao
- 1 tablespoon raw honey
- Hemp seeds optional as garnish
Place all ingredients in the blender.
Blend for 15-30 seconds, until everything is well blended. If it's too thick, add 2 tablespoons almond milk and blend again until combined.
Pour into a glass and start your day in a healthy and delicious way.
